Stucco has been chosen as an exterior for many homes throughout the years. The consistency of stucco is very durable and weather-resistant. This provides an excellent outside finish which help in protecting the home. Overtime, the stucco can become stained and have small chips or fractures in it and need to be painted or repaired.
Painting stucco does not to be a challenge. The first step in painting must be to prepare the surface for painting. Begin by using a broom or long handled brush to brush off any debris or loos stucco or using a combination of more suitable techniques to do so. Then use a pressure washer to clear the dust and any remaining loose stucco form the surface.
Before painting, the stucco will need to dry completely in order for the paint to process properly. Depending on the weather temperature, allow the stucco to dry from a few hours to a couple of days or even a few days.
After the stucco is washed and dried, you can use caulk for small hairline cracks but will need to fill the wider cracks with a thick sealant since it will hold its place more firmly. For larger damaged areas, you may have to apply stucco patching compound and let the area to dry completely before applying paint.
Now you are ready to select and purchase the stucco paint. We at Avesta Painting recommend elastomeric paint as the paint stretches to hide any hairline cracks that form. It also keep moisture out and flexes with weather temperatures.
Keep that in mind, when purchasing the stucco paint, it should contain Tricoplex. It is an additive especially for stucco. It allows the paint to flex in various temperature. AVOID USING REGULAR HOUSE PAINT OVER STUCCO.
Depending on what methods are used to paint, brush, roller or sprayed or a combination of all, you need to cover all areas that you do not wish to be stained by paint using plastic, cardboard or paper and firm them in place using painter tapes.
